PART 1 Written by FRANCE , Collège Joseph Calvet

Saint-Paul de Fenouillet

On this beautiful spring day, Lisa was walking, her long blond hair in the wind. She was rushing because she was very late. Erika, her friend was probably already waiting for her outside the small restaurant.
Lisa was upset. She had just argued with her father. She was the eldest of 4 children but had always felt very different, like the black sheep of the family.
Her relationship with her father was not good. Their move to Croatia had made things worse . Fortunately, Lisa was very outgoing .She had no trouble making new friends and Erika was really supportive.
Lisa was a very pretty girl, of average height and never went unnoticed with her big blue eyes like the ocean. She was very thin and often wore a short red dress with white flowers, white high -heel shoes and gold earrings. She had personality, never lacked ideas and loved adventure. Passionate about sailing, she dreamed that one day she would be able to travel around the world.
When she arrived at the restaurant, she immediately spotted Erika by her long ebony hair. Erika was waiting, her big emerald green eyes fixed on the television. On the screen they were showing pictures of another natural disaster … another one .. People had lost their homes, were crying in despair.
The two friends ordered a bowl of Chinese noodles but they no longer had the heart to eat their favorite dish.
The waiter came back quickly with their dish and as he put the bowl down on the table , he turned to Lisa with a strange look and whispered to her ‘ the future of the world depends on you now ‘ Then he added ‘YOU are the chosen one’
Surprised Lisa opened  her eyes wide . She asked Erika ‘What did he say? What does he mean??’ ‘I don’t know.’ replied Erika

Only then did Lisa notice her Chinese biscuit on the table, next to her bowl of noodles. . When she opened it she found a tiny piece of paper.  A map was drawn on it .There was a small cross followed by enigmatic numbers Erika hastened to open hers and read  ‘ You don’t know everything about your enemy ‘. Their Chinese biscuits were really unusual, nothing like the happy predictions  they were used to … They decided to ask  the waiter but when they turned back he was simply  gone, as if he had disappeared. All of a sudden everything seemed to have frozen, even the wind had suddenly stopped blowing.  I know what should be done ‘exclaimed Lisa! We must …….

We must help the people.

What do you mean, said Erika. What people?

Erika knew Lisa very well, she knew how helpful but also stubborn she was.

We need to get to Italy, continued Lisa.

Why Italy?, Erika was surprised.

Look what the map says….Lisa pointed to the paper. There was a map of Italy with small red dots drawn on it.

This is strange, Erika thought. You know I have grandparents there, right?

Lisa remembered the photos hanging on the walls of Erika's house, the photos of some people she knew, like Erika's brother and parents and also of some people she didn't know, but knew Erika loves and misses. There were also photos of beautiful beaches Erika often visits with her family. Every time Lisa sees them, she feels homesick. Croatia has also got a beautiful coastline and a magnificent sea.

Of course your grandparents live there. I remember. We must get there as soon as possible, exclaimed Lisa. Let's go get our stuff!

Italy?! Now? How?- Erika was not quite sure what Lisa had in mind.

Don't worry, we'll figure it out on our way.

They rushed out of the restaurant in such a hurry that they even forgot to pay for the food.

After a few minutes of running and each occupied with their own thoughts, they got to Lisa's house, but something seemed weird. The doors were unlocked and open and there was no one at home.

Lisa yelled, Dad, are you home? But no one answered. They looked around the empty house and saw a note on the kitchen table:

Dear Lisa, I'm sorry for everything I have done to you. We both know that I have not been the best dad to you and that many bad things happened to you because of me. Many of your bad experiences and sad memories are connected to me. But please know that I have always loved you and I always will. I hope you'll forgive me.

I have to go somewhere really far away from here because you are not safe with me here. I am afraid you're too young to understand, but I trust you to be old enough to take care of your siblings.

Love, dad.

What does it mean?, wondered Lisa, as tears started rolling down her cheeks,   What does it all mean?

Erika sighed, putting her hand around Lisa's shoulder.

The two girls began looking for clues all over the house. They entered Lisa’s father's study and found everything messy: sheets of paper on the floor, computers switched on and drawers open. Lisa’s father had left in one of the drawers the savings that his children would have to inherit. Without a moment's thought, Lisa took the money and, crying, ran to her siblings' school to get them back.

Chloe and Jack (the two youngest twins) were very confused at first, while Liam was very happy because the Christmas holidays were going to start the next day. When they arrived home Lisa and Erika explained everything to the children. Together they bought plane tickets, packed their suitcases to reach  Erika’s grandparents in Italy.

The next day, they got up at dawn and went to the airport with Erika. When they arrived in Italy, they went to Erika's grandparents, who were very happy to see their granddaughter again. They gladly hosted Lisa and her three siblings and invited them to stay for dinner as well.

"I'm sleepy," Lisa said as she walked to the bedroom. Brushing her teeth, however, she realised that she didn’t have a towel and rummaging in the drawer she found a map similar to the one already found in the Chinese biscuit, but this time it showed a map of the world.

Lisa hurried to get it and noticed that the places marked by the dots, put in order, formed the letters of her name: L for LeverkusenI for IstanbulS for San Francisco, and A for Athens. Other cities had special characters, but fortunately Erika was polyglot and could read them.

...As soon as Erika saw the highlighted characters on the map,she was shocked. This time the letters formed the word "come"!

She immediately ran to Lisa to show her what she had discovered.

Lisa remained with her big blue eyes wide open, her mouth gaping without being able to say a word and her hands become cold like the ice, they were trembling.

Erika was even more worried. They both looked at each other without saying anything for a while.

<<And now?>> Erika suddenly said stuttering  nervously.

<<I don't know what to do, but I know for a fact this isn't a coincidence>>Lisa replied, as a drop of sweat fell from her forehead to her neck.

After a while, they decided that the best solution was to leave for Germany, the first destination on the map.

And so they dedicated the night to prepare the trip and early in the morning, after having greeted their brothers and thanked their grandparents for their hospitality, they hastily went to the airport.

Once they landed at the international airport Konrad Adenauer, between Colonia and Bonn, the girls stopped a man and asked him for directions to find  a place to stay.

The girls followed the man's directions which however took them to an isolated place, far from the confusion of the airport and the city:they found themselves in an area where they began to glimpse a forest.Fascinated by the colors of the vegetation, they walked for a while and noticed a young fox rolling among the leaves.

The two girls......

The two girls were confused and fascinated by the young fox. But something seemed odd this time as well.
The little fox stared directly at the girls, undisturbed by other sounds or their presence.
Lisa noticed something strange and knelt in front of the fox. There was a small note hanging from the fox's paw. Carefully, Lisa reached for the note, trying not to scare the fox.
As she did that, the fox started speaking. "What do you think you're doing?" it said in a very calm voice.
Completely shocked by what just happened, Lisa and Erika jumped back. They rubbed their eyes to make sure they were really awake.
Yes, they were awake, and it didn't seem like a joke. This time, Erika cautiously approached the fox and asked in a quiet, careful voice, "You can talk?" The fox chuckled before amusedly replying, "Yes, you just noticed that. But I'm not alone here."
Lisa and Erika looked at each other as another voice sounded, this time from above. "You better not listen to him. He's cunning," spoke a calm and composed voice.
The two girls looked up and spotted a peregrine falcon sitting directly above them on a branch.
The peregrine falcon flew down and perched beside the fox before speaking again. "I've been expecting you, Lisa and Erika," said the bird, tilting its head.
Lisa smiled, slightly overwhelmed, and reached for the note again. But this time, the fox didn't allow it. However, the peregrine falcon snatched the note, and she cautiously took it to read.
Many letters were scattered all over the paper, some written more firmly than others.
Upon closer inspection, they could make out the words GALATA TOWER.
Erika looked at Lisa and pondered for a moment before asking in a calm and questioning voice, "Do you think, Lisa, that we should go there?"
Lisa nodded slightly and tucked the note into her pocket. Both stood up without questioning why the two animals could talk.
As they were about to leave, the bird perched on Erika's shoulder before speaking again: "I can help you if you want."
"Me too," said the fox, following the girls and the peregrine falcon.
So, the four of them walked through the beautifully lit forest on their way to the city. They passed some enormous trees, streams, and even a bomb crater, presumably from World War II.
Erika and Lisa took pictures in the forest before returning to the city. There, they found a hotel and discreetly smuggled the young fox and the bird into their hotel room, where they spread out and planned how to reach the tower in Istanbul.
After a brief search, they found that the tower was indeed in Istanbul and considered how they could get there.
After inquiring about Lisa's siblings from Erika's grandparents, the two girls talked with the animals for a few minutes. They noticed that the fox repeatedly tried to dissuade them from travelling to Istanbul.
With a few glances exchanged, they decided not to listen to the fox and instead turned to the falcon, who was entirely on the girls' side.
Erika and Lisa spent the night contemplating how they could get to Istanbul and booked a flight to take them there.
After a long flight, the two arrived and searched for the Galata Tower, expecting the next clue. But even when they reached the tower, they found nothing, and the fox kept insisting they were wrong and should go back.
Erika looked around before suddenly exclaiming, "Lisa, look there!" She pointed to the top of the tower, where a note was hanging similar to the one they had found.
With the help of the peregrine falcon, they retrieved the note and read what was written there. But what they read took their breath away...
